Plastic Bag Elimination
February 10, 2023

Starting March 1, 2023, Legacy Co-op will eliminate single-use plastic bags from the checkouts at all of our locations. We are taking steps to reduce our use of plastic across Legacy Co-op. We are committed to ensuring the sustainability of our communities for generations to come. This change will occur at our food stores, liquor store, gas bars/c-stores and our home and ag centres.

Why are we doing this now?

Sustainability is a key element of Legacy Co-op and our future. We are committed to ensuring the sustainability of our communities for generations to come. In 2022, together with FCL, we signed the Canada Plastic Pact (CPP). The CPP has set clear, actionable targets, one being that businesses take measures to eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging. Sustainable practices help us make better decisions for our members, customers, team members, and partners, ensuring the long-term success of our company. We are proud of the actions we have taken to address our role in sustainable development and look forward to continued progress.

The federal Government has also mandated that plastic checkout bags can not be manufactured or imported for sale in Canada after December 20, 2022 and will not be able to be sold in Canada after December 20, 2023. We are taking steps ahead of these timelines by eliminating plastic bags on March 1, 2023, in order to reduce our impact to the environment.

What does this mean for our members, customers and team members?

We encourage all our members, customers, and team members to remember their reusable bags from home! We have reusable totes and bag options for sale in-store, including a reusable cloth bag for 35 cents per bag available at the tills in case you forget to bring reusable bags on a visit. Have a look next time you are in one of our locations, and please ask a Team Leader if you have questions.
