Legacy Co-op in the Community
Legacy Co-op was proud to end their 2021 year by giving back in contributions to the community. Throughout 2021, Legacy Co-op contributed over $158,000 combined in donations, community support and member relations. Capping the year off with the Season of Giving, as well as several large donations, and the creation of two scholarships with Parkland College.
Season of Giving
Legacy Co-op’s second Season of Giving included Good Buy to Hunger, Gifts for Seniors, Adopt A Family, Letters to Santa, Kids Shopping Day, Countdown to Christmas and new to the program, the Legacy Elves.
Good Buy to Hunger, a longstanding charitable initiative, raised $25,876 to help feed those hungry in the Parkland region.
“Good Buy to Hunger is a large part of our annual Season of Giving, and this year our team members really took charge and drove its success,” stated Jessie Huber, Legacy Co-op’s Marketing Manager. “Our teams set challenges for themselves to hit a big target and smashed through that goal. We are very proud of our team members and the community rallying together, allowing us to give back to this extent” continued Huber.
Of the total raised $23,725.56 was presented to the Soup Haven and forms a large part of the yearly budget to provide lunches to kids.
A total of $1,952.32 raised by the Kamsack C-Store and Food Store was presented to Megan Holodniuk, Early Years
Facilitator, SIGN Kamsack Family Resource Centre and will go towards the food programming resources to help fight hunger in Kamsack.
An additional $198.32 was raised by the Churchbridge Food Store and was donated to the school lunch program to assist in supplying meals and snacks for elementary students.
The Gifts for Seniors campaign built on the success of the previous year. Bringing personalized gifts and letters of love to the more than 300 seniors in the residential care facilities in the communities of Yorkton, Saltcoats, Kamsack and Theodore. Working with the care home teams, Legacy Co-op donated funds to allow for the purchase of gifts for each resident along with a Christmas letter from the Legacy Co-op team.
Legacy Co-op’s team members were pleased to adopt 13 families from the Parkland community through Legacy Co-op’s Adopt A Family program, in partnership with SIGN. Each family received gifts for every family member, some necessary goods and all the supplies necessary for traditional Christmas meals.
Also returning was Countdown to Christmas, where Legacy Co-op shoppers entered to win $50 giftcards from local businesses every week and a grand prize package of $2,000.
New in 2021, Legacy Elves had Legacy Co-op team members hitting the streets the week before Christmas providing random giveaways to those out shopping local in the communities of Yorkton, Churchbridge and Kamsack. Giving away $2,000 in gift cards, along with car wash, coffee and slush vouchers, chocolates, chicken dinner meals and frozen turkeys!
Community Donations
Legacy Co-op announced the donation of $150,000 towards the Yorkton Lions Legacy Co-op Wonders of Winter Light Project securing the naming rights to the Wonders of Winter Light display over 5 years. This commitment, in partnership with the Yorkton Lions will benefit all of our trading area as we contribute to the Holiday Spirit. While the light display is currently closed for the season, we look forward to welcoming it again next year and thank all that supported the Lions initiative this year.
A donation of $5,500.00 was presented to the SIGN Early Learning Centre on Dec. 17, 2024, as part of their "Forging a Radiant Path Towards Tomorrow" project. The project included renovations to the kitchen and daycare facilities. Andrew Sedley, CEO of SIGN expressed "The Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbors (SIGN) and our Early
Learning Centre is very grateful to receive $5,500 from Legacy Co-op for kitchen renovations and improvements at the daycare, including a new stove, ovens, freezer, and cabinets. Legacy Co-op's generous gift covers half the cost. The kitchen provides daily meals and snacks for 45 children, ensuring they receive healthy food throughout the day. The gift continues Legacy Co-op's strong support of SIGN and our 24 programs, and we value their involvement not just with us, but with all the communities where they have a presence.”
A $5000.00 donation was presented to St. Alphonsus School on Dec 17, 2024 as part of the St. Alponsus School Community Council Playground Project, a transformative initiative aimed at creating a safe and vibrant space for children to learn, play and grow. Children from each grade came to be apart of the photo as our Board presented the cheque.
Scholarships
Putting a focus back on education, Legacy Co-op is proud to offer two new scholarships with Parkland College. These annual scholarships amount to $2,000 each with the first to be awarded Spring 2022.
