Co-op Week: Powering the Economy, our Communities
Yorkton, SK (for immediate release) — As Co-op Week is celebrated across Canada from Oct. 11 to 17, Legacy Co-op is proud to recognize the important role co-operatives play in powering the economy and building stronger communities. “This year's theme, Powering the Economy, highlights how co-operatives create opportunities, support local businesses, provide meaningful employment and invest in the places we all call home,” explains Harley McClughan, Legacy Co-op General Manager.
For generations, the Co-operative Retailing System (CRS), made up of local Co-ops and Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL), has demonstrated that business can be successful while putting people first. Unlike traditional businesses, Co-ops are owned by their members and operate with a commitment to serving communities, not outside shareholders. Every purchase made at a Co-op helps strengthen the local economy and contributes to the long-term success of the communities we serve.
McClughan goes on to say, “At Legacy Co-op, our impact extends far beyond our retails. We create local jobs, support employee development and partner with countless community organizations, events and initiatives. These investments help improve quality of life for residents while fostering economic growth throughout our trading area.”
As a proudly Canadian organization, Co-op also supports Canadian producers, suppliers and partners. Programs such as Proudly Western Canadian help strengthen regional supply chains, showcase local products and keep more dollars circulating within Western Canada. By investing in local businesses and producers, Co-op helps create sustainable economic opportunities that benefit communities today and for future generations.
The strength of the Co-operative model lies in its members. Across Western Canada, more than two million members help shape the future of their local Co-ops. Membership is more than a card in your wallet. It is an opportunity to have a voice in how the organization operates and grows. Through the democratic principle of one member, one vote, members help guide decisions, elect directors and ensure their Co-op remains focused on community needs.
Co-operatives are built on seven internationally recognized principles, including voluntary and open membership, democratic member control, education, co-operation among co-operatives and concern for community. These principles continue to guide how Co-ops operate and distinguish them from other business models.
One of the most visible examples of Co-op's commitment to community is the support provided through programs such as Fuel Good Day, scholarships, local sponsorships and charitable giving initiatives. Every year, these programs help strengthen local organizations, support youth and contribute to causes that matter most to our members and communities.
As we celebrate Co-op Week 2026, we invite members and customers to reflect on the impact of co-operation. Together, we are creating jobs, supporting local businesses, investing in communities and helping build a stronger economy for everyone.
“I just want to say thank you to our members, employees, directors and customers for being part of our Co-op story. Your support continues to demonstrate the power of co-operation and the difference that member-owned businesses can make,” adds McClughan. “When communities work together, everyone benefits. That's the Co-op difference, and that's how we power the economy.”
